The Parting

Naraku, knowing of Kikyou's plan to purify him along with the Shikon no Tama, formulated a plan to stain Kikyou's heart with hatred once again to halt her plans as well as end up killing her by ensnaring Kikyou, Inuyasha, and Kagome in his tainted spider webs.. Kikyou, after protecting a young girl from the webs, ended up entangled with them herself. Neither Kikyou, Inuyasha nor Kagome fell for Naraku's illusions as he had planned, but the shouki wounds that Kikyou had received from Naraku at Hakureizan widened to a dangerous point. In order to heal her, Kagome would have to go to Azusa Mountain and retrieve the bow that resided there, then shoot Kikyou's wound with an arrow.

Despite Kagome's best efforts, she was not able to save Kikyou. Naraku, who had been battling Inuyasha, saw that Kikyou had lost to his jiyaki and fled.

Naraku: Kikyou... You lose...
Kikyou: (in thought) Whether I have lost or not... Naraku...we will find that out when you die...

Inuyasha, seeing that Kikyou's life was leaving her, carried her out on to a hill where the two of them could be alone. Kikyou mused about the past that they could have had, saying that she had finally became an ordinary woman, when Inuyasha began to cry, stating that he hadn't been able to save her. Kikyou tells Inuyasha that it didn't matter to her. She was just happy that he'd came for her.

Inuyasha: Kikyou... You were the first precious woman that I ever came to love. But for all that...I couldn't do anything for you...
Kikyou: It's the first time I've seen this... Inuyasha... Your face, crying like this.
Inuyasha: Kikyou, I...I couldn't save you!
Kikyou: You...came for me... I'm alright with that.
Inuyasha: Kikyou... (they kiss) Kikyou...
Kikyou: Inuyasha...
(Kikyou passes)
Kagome's group: !
Kagome: Kikyou... (Kikyou's Shinidamachuu fly by) Shinidamachuu...
Miroku: This light...
Sango: Kikyou's soul...
Shippou: It's as if...she's saying farwell...
Kagome: It's warm...
Inuyasha: Kikyou...is saying, "Don't mourn."
Kagome: Inuyasha...
Inuyasha: "I'll always protect you."

After embracing in a kiss, Kikyou's soul departed along with her Shinidamachuu into the sky while Inuyasha, Kagome, Miroku, Sango, Shippou, and Kouga all watched. In a later chapter, "Tears of Blood," Kagome asks Inuyasha if he wanted to follow Kikyou to the afterlife. Inuyasha responds that Kagome's voice broght him out of the illusion of Kikyou beconing him to come with her by Kagome's voice. Kagome thinks to herself that his response wasn't really an answer, leaving people to believe that he did indeed want to go with her. :(
